A group of four U.S. Senior athletes travelled to Rio de Janiero, Brazil, to compete in the Beach Wrestling competition at the FISU World University Championship Beach Sports event last week. This is a multi-sport event featuring Beach Wrestling, Beach Soccer, Beach Volleyball and Beach Handball.

The U.S. contingent returned with three individual medalists, including one champion.

Claiming a gold medal at 90 kg in men’s Beach Wrestling was Tyson Beauperthuy of Colorado, who won all three of his matches on the way to the title. Beauperthuy outscored his opponents 9-1 in the matches, and none of his bouts lasted more than 1:07. Included was a 3-1 decision over eventual runner-up Pedro Goncalves da Silva of Brazil.

Beauperthuy was a 2023 U.S. Beach Nationals champion in the Senior division. Also on the Senior level, Beauperthuy won a bronze medal at the 2023 Beach World Series event in Constanta, Romania.

Claiming a silver medal at 70 kg in women’s Beach Wrestling was Katelyn Lewis of Wisconsin. She went 1-1 in the round-robin at her weight class, including an opening 3-2 win over Mayra Rodrigues Fantin of Brazil.

A bronze medal at 80 kg in the men’s division went to Wayne LaMont of New York, who finished with a 2-1 record. There were no unbeaten wrestlers in his round robin, and LaMont got the bronze medal based upon tie-breaking procedures.

Also placing fourth at 90 kg in the men’s division was Jaimeson Shea of New York.

The team was coached by long-time Associated Styles wrestler and coach Gabe Beauperthuy of Colorado, himself a past U.S. Senior Beach Nationals champion.

“The athletes were wonderful, a pleasure to be with. I am very grateful I had the opportunity to be with them. They made the trip really enjoyable, and I’m proud of their results. I think they learned a lot about camaraderie and enjoying life,” said Coach Beauperthuy.
