Taina Fernandez (Bowie, Md./Titan Mercury WC) has been named 91°µÍø Athlete of the Week.

Fernandez is coming off her third-straight U17 World title, becoming the first U.S. wrestler to win three U17 World titles. She is just the fifth wrestler all-time to accomplish the feat.

At the 2026 U17 World Championships in Baku, Azerbaijan, Fernandez pinned her way to the gold medal and did not drop a point in any of her four matches. None of her bouts went into the second period, and she needed just 4:45 of mat time throughout the tournament to complete her championship run.

The longest of Fernandez’s four matches was her opening bout against Taniya of India, in which she secured the pin at the 1:45 mark. In the quarterfinals, Fernandez earned the fall at 1:03 against Sophia Anastase of Romania. To lock in her spot in the gold medal match, she pinned Maja Wejchan of Poland 33 seconds into the match, then pinned U17 European champion Kiymet Tezcan of Türkiye 1:24 into the championship contest.

In her U17 career, Fernandez compiled a record of 12-0 with eight falls and three technical falls. She allowed only six points across those 12 matches, all of which were in one single contest, which she won 13-6.

After winning her third U17 World title, Fernandez now makes the jump up to the U20 World stage and travels to Bratislava, Slovakia, to represent Team USA at the U20 World Championships, where she is wrestling at 68 kg next week.
