BAKU, Azerbaijan – Marlee Solomon and Taina Fernandez both pinned their way to gold medal bouts and Landri Von Gonten scored late to come from behind to secure her spot in the championship match at the 2026 U17 World Championships.

Solomon got off to a strong start with an early takedown, and the only point 2023 U15 Pan American bronze medalist Alejandra Serrano Roa of Colombia scored came on a reversal after Solomon’s opening score. Solomon took over and ran her lead out to 12-1 before settling in for the fall with 18 seconds left.

At 53 kg, Solomon battles Akshara of India for the U17 World title.

The two-time U17 World champion Fernandez pinned her way throughout the tournament thus far, needing just 33 seconds to pin Maja Wejchan of Poland. Fernandez worked a front headlock into an armbar to stick the pin.

In the 69 kg gold medal bout, Fernandez faces 2026 U17 European champion Kiymet Tezcan of Türkiye.

Von Gonten rounded out the semifinal winners on Thursday night. After leading by three at the start, Aruzhan Bakytnuy of Kazakhstan took the advantage after sending Von Gonten to her back. The back-and-forth battle commenced, but Von Gonten scored the final two points to grab the 7-6 victory.

For gold, Von Gonten squares off against Ozdenur Ozmez of Türkiye at 61 kg.

Sophia Valdez moved into the bronze medal match after dropping a tight 4-2 affair to Natsumi Sasaki of Japan. Sasaki’s two step out points proved the difference in the match. In the 40 kg bronze medal match, Valdez takes on two-time U15 Asian medalist Rohini Devba of India.

Madison Healey was pulled back into the repechage after the semifinals on Thursday, with Kokona Makino of Japan advancing to the finals at 46 kg. In the repechage, Healey goes up against Mungunchimeg Gavaa of Mongolia.

Women’s freestyle action concludes on Friday with the repechage matches for group two at 10:30 a.m. local time/2:30 a.m. ET, followed by medal matches at 6 p.m. local/10 a.m. ET.
