BAKU, Azerbaijan – Day one of men’s freestyle at the 2026 U17 World Championships came to a close with Chase Karenbauer dropping his semifinal bout at the National Gymnastics Arena.

Facing Colombia’s Jovanni Tovar, who finished fifth at last year’s U17 World Championships, Karenbauer suffered a 10-0 loss. Tovar controlled the match from the start, and after Karenbauer’s lone score was wiped away by a challenge, he was unable to bounce back.

Karenbauer now moves into the bronze medal round at 55 kg. He will await the winner of the repechage rounds that include Yusuf Koack of Türkiye, Khusel Purevaaatar of Mongolia and 2025 U15 Asian champion Prathmesh Patil of India.

Kooper Deputy was pulled back into the repechage at 48 kg after India’s Aaryan won his semifinal bout. Deputy faces the winner of two-time age-group European champion Huseyn Rzazade (Azerbaijan) and Amirali Ragheb Faz (Iran) for a shot to compete for bronze on Saturday night.
