BAKU, Azerbaijan – Rylen Wax became the second member of Team USA to move into a gold medal match at the 2026 U17 World Championships. Wax battled to a 2-1 decision at the National Gymnastics Arena.

In the semifinals at 45 kg, Wax fell behind early against Afruzbek Ibragimov of Uzbekistan after being hit with passivity. However, on the ensuing par terre battle, Wax scored a reversal to tie the match 1-1 heading into the break. In the second period, Wax broke the tie with a passivity point of his own. The 2-1 score held for the remainder of the match with Wax fending off late offensive attacks from Ibragimov.

Wax now faces U17 European champion Ali Javadli of Azerbaijan in the championship match on Wednesday at 6 p.m. local time/10 a.m. ET. Javadli advanced to the gold medal match after winning by forfeit in the semifinals.

Wyatt Dannegger saw his bid for the repechage come to an end during the semifinals after returning U17 World bronze medalist Vadim Tarelunga of Moldova lost 10-0 to reigning U17 World champion Bunyod Hasanov of Uzbekistan.

At 92 kg, William Etu stayed alive for the repechage with Hlib Yevsieiev of Ukraine advancing to the finals. Etu faces the winner of Amirreza Mehritalarposhti of Iran and U15 European bronze medalist Zohrab Safarov of Azerbaijan in the repechage tomorrow.

The final day of Greco-Roman competition is tomorrow with repechage bouts at 10:30 a.m. local time/2:30 a.m. ET for group two. The medal round will be at 6 p.m. local time/10 a.m. ET. Women’s freestyle action also begins tomorrow morning.
