BAKU, Azerbaijan – Rylen Wax locked in his spot in tonight’s semifinal round at 45 kg with two wins during the morning session of day two at the 2026 U17 World Championships at the National Gymnastics Arena.

In the round of 16, Wax used a four-point hip toss to upend U17 European bronze medalist Vazgen Vardanyan of Armenia in a 4-1 decision. After a long wait between matches, Wax teched his way into the semifinals. Facing U15 European champion Arsan Aliev of Russia, Wax controlled the pace from the start and led 7-0 heading into the break. After surrendering two points, Wax got back on the offensive and clinched the 11-2 technical fall to move into the semifinals.

Wax now battles Afruzbek Ibragimov of Uzbekistan in the semifinals tonight at 5 p.m. local time/9 a.m. ET.

William Etu is still alive for a repechage appearance after being pinned in the quarterfinals at 92 kg by Hlib Yevsieiev of Ukraine. In his first match of the day, Etu needed just 27 seconds to pin two-time age-group Balkans medalist Polykarpos Servetas of Greece following a four-point toss.

Cooper Mathews and Aiden Arnett both won their first matches of the day before bowing out of the tournament in the round of 16. Mathews posted a 12-4 technical fall against Artush Petrosyan of Armenia but dropped a 9-4 decision to Hinata Hanamori of Japan at 60 kg. Arnett started the tournament with a 7-2 win against two-time age-group Balkans medalist Albert Deacu of Romania at 71 kg. Arnett was then upended 8-0 by Baiel Nuraliev of Kyrgyzstan.

Hanamori and Nuraliev both lost in the quarterfinals, ending the repechage hopes for Mathews and Arnett.

Wyatt Dannegger dropped a tight 9-4 contest to returning U17 World bronze medalist Vadim Tarelunga of Moldova to start his tournament at 51 kg but is still alive for the repechage with Tarelunga competing in the semifinals.
