BAKU, Azerbaijan – Salah Tsarni and Rylen Wax both advanced to the men’s freestyle semifinals for Team USA at the 2026 U17 World Championships on Saturday at the National Gymnastics Arena.

After winning the U17 Greco-Roman World title at 45 kg earlier this week, Wax went 2-0 during his first men’s freestyle session at the championships. He started with a 14-3 technical fall against Hanumant Jadhav of India. In a back-and-forth battle in the quarterfinals, Wax outlasted Aryn Zhanat of Kazakhstan, 8-6.

In the semifinals, Wax faces off against Mahdi Daerrcheli of Iran.

Making his debut on the World stage, Tsarni impressed from the start at 92 kg with a 12-1 technical fall against Artem Zalvovskyi of Ukraine. Facing Mohammad Isazadeh of Iran in the round of 16, Tsarni ran up a 10-2 lead before settling in for a fall with 12 seconds to go in the match.

Tsarni posted back-to-back pins after steamrolling past Shu Yoshida of Japan in 55 seconds. Tsarni scored a pair of four-point moves before sticking the pin to move into the semifinals. Tsarni squares off against India’s Saksham for a spot in the championship finals.

Camryn Howard posted a win in his first match at the U17 World Championships in a 12-1 technical fall against Georgo Both of Slovakia. Howard bowed out of title contention at 71 kg following an 8-1 loss to Reza Shamsipourhajivand of Iran. Howard is still alive for a shot at the repechage with Shamsipourhajivand competing in tonight’s semifinals.

Rounding out the U.S. in the second men’s freestyle group were Evan Restivo (51 kg) and Jojo Burke (60 kg). The pair dropped their opening bouts and have also been eliminated from repechage contention. Restivo suffered a 12-1 loss to Said Nabiev of Tajikistan and Burke lost to Shota Fujiwara of Japan, 10-6.
