William Etu competing in the repechage at the 2026 U17 World Championships in Baku, Azerbaijan
BAKU, Azerbaijan – The lone Greco-Roman wrestler in action for Team USA during the early session on Wednesday at the 2026 U17 World Championship was William Etu in repechage rounds at the National Gymnastics Arena.
Needing just one win to move into the 92 kg bronze medal match tonight, Etu fell just short in a narrow 4-3 decision against Amirreza Mehritalarposhti of Iran. Etu scored first from passivity and kept the 1-0 lead heading into the second period. Action picked up in the final two minutes with Mehritalarposhti looking for a throw from a bodylock, but Etu limited it to a two-point move. Etu came right back and regained the lead with his first takedown of the match.
Holding the 3-2 lead, Etu looked for a shoulder toss, but Mehritalarposhti countered to take control and broke down Etu from his quadpod on the edge of the mat to pick the two points and take the lead. Etu’s late efforts to find points came up short and suffered a 4-3 defeat.
